Keynote at HEET 2024 Osaka: Vacuum Insulated Materials for Net-Zero Buildings

HEET 2024 Osaka: Vacuum Insulated Materials for Net-Zero Buildings

Event: The 7th International Symposium on Hydrogen Energy and Energy Technologies (HEET 2024)
Dates: 14–15 November 2024
Location: Osaka, Japan
Role: Keynote speaker — Professor Saim Memon, CEO of Sanyou London
Event page: https://www.heet-18.org/Speakers.html

What happened?

Professor Saim Memon delivered a keynote titled “Energy-Saving Performance of Vacuum Insulated Wallpaper (VIW) and Innovations in Vacuum Insulation Technologies.” The talk showed how VIW, VIP and Decorative Integrated VIP (DVIP) enable deep energy savings with slim build-ups, supporting net-zero targets where space and disruption must be minimal.

Why did it matter?

Buildings in cold-arid and hot-arid regions need powerful insulation without bulky thickness. Vacuum-insulated formats provide very low heat transfer at low thickness, cutting heating and cooling loads, reducing bills and carbon, and aligning with building regulations and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Keynote highlights — title and abstract in brief

Keynote title: Unchaining Net Zero Energy Building Infrastructure: The Role of Vacuum Insulated Materials in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals and Combatting Climate Change Through Energy Efficiency.

Abstract summary:

  • VIW: thermal conductivity < 5 mW/m·K at ~4 mm; a slim, cost-effective internal surface insulation that improves energy efficiency without sacrificing space.
  • VIPs (fibreglass core): 15 mm thickness achieving < 2.5 mW/m·K.
  • VIPs (fumed silica core): 25 mm thickness achieving < 4.5 mW/m·K.
  • DVIP external system (metal + MCM sandwich tile): 30 mm thickness achieving < 7 mW/m·K with fire resistance and weather-proofing for tough conditions.
  • Performance indicators reported: up to 22% energy reduction, around 15 dB noise reduction, and 15% lower temperature rise over 6 hours compared with homogeneous panels.
Together, these formats outperform conventional XPS, EPS, mineral wool and polyurethane at comparable or lower thickness, enabling practical retrofit and new-build pathways to net-zero.

What should industry and academia take away?

  • Space-efficient performance: achieve the target U-values without deep build-ups.
  • All-climate utility: retain heat in winter; block heat ingress in summer.
  • Compliance and delivery: support regulations, shorten payback, and scale through manufacturable designs.
  • Systems thinking: pair vacuum insulation with airtightness, shading and controlled ventilation for stable comfort and lower energy use.
